Coffee now cold from the air and the length of time I’d held the mug, I fixed my unfocused gaze on the dark liquid to keep from watching the various agents scattered around my property in search of evidence. At least the sun was peeking over the horizon, offering the promise of light and warmth soon. My slow breaths fogged in front of me. With every blink, it was like scraping sandpaper over my tired, dry eyes, yet I couldn’t sleep. I’d been awake now since a little before four. After accidentally tasing Jameson and knowing the crazy fucker was so close, there was no way I could go back to bed.

How long could I physically go on like this?

After last night, almost being attacked in my home, and also startled awake by a fire alarm, which triggered too many terrible memories—I wasn’t sure if I’d ever sleep again. At least not until we caught the bastard.

And who knew when that would be?

My pulse raced as I considered all the aspects of my life that were unsettled because the sick bastard wanted me. Who knew when Crew could come home and return to school? Then there was my job. I was already in hot water from being out for two days with no warning a few weeks ago and then calling in sick last week.

“You okay?” Tallon asked. The porch swing shifted backward, the chain squeaking under his heavier weight as he sat beside me.

Stare locked on my coffee mug, I shook my head. “I don’t think I am, honestly. This won’t stop,” I stated, my tone void of emotion, too exhausted to be upset or panicked. Emptiness and feeling lost held me in this static state of awareness, yet emotionless. It was the same state I would slip into when Jett would berate me. In this dark void, nothing mattered. “And I don’t know where to start in getting my life back together. Should I just move?” That wasn’t ideal, but it was an option. “That would mean ripping Crew out of school halfway through the year and me finding a new job, selling the house….”

The enormity of it all had tears building in my lower lids, though that emptiness still gripped me tight, refusing to let me feel the swelling panic and sadness.

When I twisted to face where Tallon sat, he blanched, no doubt seeing the tears and blank face. “I’m overwhelmed, exhausted, and lost,” I admitted, my voice shaky.

He simply nodded and wrapped an arm around my shoulders, drawing me closer to his side. With the heavy weight of his arm, his comforting presence, and blazing body heat, my body relaxed, allowing me to mold against him. With him, the void ebbed away, allowing the full force of my emotions to barrel through me.

“I don’t know what to do, Tallon,” I whispered. “What am I supposed to do?”

“I’m here, Remy,” he said. A smile spread across my face when he rested his head on top of mine. “I’m not going anywhere until you’re safe.
